An anonymous caller told the Longboat Observer that Bugs Bunny was recently kidnapped from the Longboat Key Chamber of Commerce’s office.

Chamber Executive Director Gail Loefgren didn’t notice the rabbit’s disappearance until she was informed by the Longboat Observer.

“Bugs is gone?!” she exclaimed.

Bugs Bunny has been Loefgren’s faithful companion since around 1989, when she was mayor of Rochelle, Ill. Warner Bros. Cable was launching Univision and invited all the mayors in Ogle County to a reception. Because he’s a Warner Bros. cartoon, mayors each received a stuffed Bugs Bunny.

The bunny-napping is reminiscent of a similar incident that occurred in the early 2000s, when Bugs Bunny was stolen from the office. Loefgren does not know who was responsible, but she frequently received photographs of Bugs in captivity.

Loefgren doesn’t know who is responsible for the latest heist, but she is hoping for Bugs Bunny’s safe return.

“I’m pleading that someone will have a good heart and return Bugs Bunny,” she said.
