The Lakewood Ranch boys soccer team went into Thursday night’s regional playoff game as a three-time district champion.

Despite securing home field advantage in the first round, the Mustangs lost a heartbreaking game against Fort Myers via penalty kicks, 2-1 (5-4).

Fort Myers scored the game’s first goal with 12 minutes to go in the game.

The 1-0 lead seemed like it would be enough, but several minutes later, John Rivera sunk a penalty kick to tie the game at 1 apiece.

After two overtime periods went scoreless, the game was sent to penalty kicks, where Fort Myers was able to narrowly eek out a victory.
