Applications due soon
The deadline for the Giving Matters scholarship is approaching. Applications are still available for the $1,000 scholarship presented by Community Youth Development and the Southwest Florida chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. All applications are due by Feb. 4 to qualify for the 2015 term.

The Southwest Florida chapter of AFP partnered with CYD to award the prize to an outstanding Sarasota County high school female in grades 10 through 12 who has influenced the community and her peers by specific philanthropic efforts. The prize will be awarded as a $500 scholarship to the recipient’s choice of post-secondary educational institution and a $500 contribution to her choice of local nonprofit organization.

Giving Matters, a program of the Southwest Florida chapter of the AFP, created the Youth Philanthropy Leadership Award in memory of Lois B. Green in 2011. For information on the criteria and application process, visit cydonline.org or email [email protected].

Kiltie band performs
The Riverview High School Kiltie Band will perform the music of John Philip Sousa during the annual Sousa Concert at 7 p.m. Friday, at the Riverview Performing Arts Center, 1 Ram Way.

“The Sousa Concert has been our most popular event for many years,” said Mark Spreen, director of the Kiltie Band in a release. “This show is probably our best of the year; it attracts music-lovers of all ages. Seeing more than 100 students in these impressive traditional uniforms is pretty amazing in itself, but the music is what we love to share.”

Admission is a $5 donation at the door. Groups needing reserved seating can be arranged by contacting Miriam Thompson at 539-5383 or [email protected].

St. Martha hosts gala
St. Martha Catholic School will host the Zazarino Center Fundraising Gala Saturday, Feb. 21, at the Bishop Nevins Academy campus, 4380 Fruitville Road. Proceeds from the gala will go toward the building of the new Zazarino Center.

The facility will include a gymnasium with bleachers, basketball and volleyball courts, additional classrooms, locker rooms, a concession area, performance and event hall, stage and backstage area, community room, music room, physical education office and additional storage space.

The Zazarino Center Fundraising Gala is a black tie-optional event. The event will be catered by Michael’s On East and will begin with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. Live music by Mainstream and dancing will conclude the evening.
