Longboat Key winter resident Ed Adams was recently elected to the board of directors of Sister Cities International.

Seven new at-large members were elected to the 24-member board of directors at the organization’s annual business meeting during its 59th annual conference in Minneapolis, Minn. from July 16 to 18.

“I’m really honored to be elected to this board,” Adams said. “Sister Cities International is one of the great citizen diplomacy efforts we have in America. It’s a particularly trying time internationally, so the more we can do on a person-to-person basis, the better off we’ll be. I’m really pleased to be given this opportunity.”

The other elected board of directors are Jo Bice, of Washington, D.C.; John Dabeet of Muscatine, Iowa; Mark Jackson, of Birmingham, Ala.; Ron Nirenberg, of San Antonia, Texas; and Christina Warnke, of Washington, D.C. Additionally, Ron Gossett, of Sarasota, was re-elected as an at-large member to the board.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower founded Sister Cities International in 1956. It serves as the national membership organization for more than 545 sister cities, counties and states across the U.S., which provides relationships in more than 2,100 communities in 145 countries. The organization aims to promote peace and understanding between the cities.
