St. Armands clinic requests revived

A proposal for a Sarasota Memorial Hospital satellite clinic on St. Armands Circle will be resuscitated when it goes before the city of Sarasota’s Board of Adjustment next month.

SMH spokeswoman Kim Savage said a resubmitted application that now includes three variances instead of four will come before the zoning board 1:30 p.m. Aug. 26, at Sarasota City Hall.

To address concerns, SMH nixed a request for space for an imaging center on the third floor of the clinic. By eliminating that space and opening up a stairwell, the interior area space has been reduced, which eliminates the need for 15 extra parking spaces.

The zoning board took issue with SMH’s request to reduce the number of parking spaces below what city guidelines require when it denied four variances May 27.

Plans still call for the urgent care center proposed on the second floor and a surface lot/ground parking on the first level.

Island mayors wary of growth

The town of Longboat Key is one of four island municipalities that are signing a letter this summer asking Manatee County Administrator Ed Hunzeker and Bradenton Mayor Wayne Poston to provide insight on how they are planning for an influx of growth in West Bradenton.

New developments called Lake Flores and Long Bar Pointe will bring thousands of homes, along with new commercial space and eateries to the area in the next 10 years.

A meeting will be scheduled to discuss plans for growth with mainland officials.
