BRSC U9 girls post runner-up finish; MBC Elite wins Memorial Day tournament; Mustangs win Academic Team Championship; Florida Burn takes third in Perfect Game tourney

BRSC U9 girls post runner-up finish 

The Braden River Soccer Club U9 girls team finished second at the Disney Memorial Day Soccer Shootout May 23 through May 25 at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports. 

The Rage went 2-0-1 in pool play, defeating Jupiter United 3-1 and the Boynton Beach Knights 2-1 before tying West Pasco FC 1-1. 

Braden River went on to beat Miami Springs 2-0 in the semifinals before falling to Wellington Soccer Club 2-0 in the championship game. 

Players include Jamie Bolduc, Aubrey Robbins, Sophie Lemus, Paige McElyea, Ally Frank, Brooke Harris, Brinley Beorlegui, Abbey Burwood and Olivia Conelias. 

Mustangs win Academic Team Championship 

Lakewood Ranch High won its fifth consecutive Florida High School Athletic Association Academic Team Championship, finishing first overall in Class 7A. 

The Mustangs scored 136 points to finish ahead of Fort Myers’ 91 points. 

During the spring, Lakewood’s boys track team and boys weightlifting team both finished first in their respective sports. The girls track team finished second, and the school’s baseball and softball teams both finished third. 

Lakewood finished third overall in Class 7A in the 2014-15 FHSAA Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards point standings. 

MBC Elite wins Memorial Day tournament 

The Manatee Basketball Club Elite 10th grade boys basketball team won the Disney Memorial Day AAU Division I tournament.

The team has posted a 39-5 record this spring, including a 19-1 record versus 11th and 12th grade competition. 

MBC Elite has won seven of the nine tournaments it’s entered, including 11th grade USSSA events in Tampa, Clearwater, St. Petersburg and Fort Myers, as well as the Florida 10th grade AAU District championship in Tavares. 

Most recently, the team competed in the USSSA state tournament this past weekend, in Fort Pierce. 

Members include Lakewood Ranch players Jack Kelley, Justin Muscara, Kodey Elliott, Devin Twenty, Sam Hester, Brock Sisson, Blauvelt Georges and Cameron Linblad; Braden River’s Deoni Cason; and Clearwater Central Catholic’s Conor Lusnia. 

Florida Burn takes third in Perfect Game tourney 

The Florida Burn 2016 Easton Team finished third in the Perfect Game USA 18U WWBA East Memorial Day Classic May 22 through May 25 at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers. 

The Burn advanced to the Final Four of the 77-team tournament before falling to Elite Squad Prime 2-1. 

Braden River’s Eric Kimsey was named to all-tournament team after pitching five shutout innings in two outings. Kimsey earned one win while striking out six. Braden River’s Brian Dillingham was also honored for posting a .353 batting average throughout the tournament. 

Local Burn players include Eric Kimsey, Brian Dillingham, Taylor Garris, Gabriel Lozada, Rylee Buckmaster, Tyler Gardner, Trevor Holloway and Brent Killam. 

Other local players earning all-tournament honors for their respective travel teams include Braden River’s Brock Younce, Inspiration Academy’s Matthew Ambrosino  and Lakewood Ranch’s Shane Zipperer. 

National Championships coming to Benderson Park 

The 2015 US Rowing Youth National Championships will be held from June 12 through June 14, at Nathan Benderson Park. 

Approximately 1,500 athletes on more than 150 teams from across the country will compete in the U.S. youth rowing event. 

Teams from all 50 states will be present, including the Sarasota Crew and the Sarasota Scullers. Junior rowers will vie for national titles in 18 boat classes. 

Admission is free, and parking is $5. Racing will begin at 8 a.m. and continue through 5 p.m. daily.
