Sarasota Christian wins Sunshine Cup; Sunshine State Games heads to SRQ; National Championships coming to Benderson Park

Sarasota Christian wins Sunshine Cup

Sarasota Christian recently won the Florida High School Athletic Association Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Award for Class 2A Private. 

The Blazers scored 49 points to finish ahead of Grandview Prep (40). Points are awarded to a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in its respective classification. 

Sarasota High finished 10th in Class 7A. 

Sunshine State Games heads to SRQ 

The Sunshine State Games Sarasota-Bradenton Festival will be held June 6 through June 8. 

More than 1,500 athletes will compete in seven sports throughout the Sarasota-Bradenton area. This is the second consecutive year the area has hosted a SSG Olympic-style Sports Festival. 

This year’s competition schedule includes: 

  • Archery: June 6 and June 7, at Sarasota County Archers and the Premier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch
  • Canoe/Kayak/Stand Up Paddleboard: June 6, at Nathan Benderson Park (sprints) and June 7, at Fort Hamer Park (marathon)
  • Disc Golf: June 6, at Lake-view Park
  • Racquetball: June 6 and June 7, at the Sarasota YMCA Frank G. Berlin Sr. Branch
  • Rowing: June 6, at Nathan Benderson Park 
  • Synchronized Swimming: June 6 through June 8, at the Selby Aquatic Center 
  • Ultimate Frisbee: June 6 and June 7, at the Premier Sports Campus at Lakewood Ranch

National Championships coming to Benderson Park 

The 2015 USRowing Youth National Championships will be held June 12 through June 14, at Nathan Benderson Park. 

Approximately 1,500 athletes competing in more than 350 crews and representing more than 150 teams from across the country will participate in the United States’ premier youth rowing event. 

Teams from all 50 states will be present, including the Sarasota Crew and the Sarasota Scullers. Junior rowers will vie for national titles in 18 boat classes. 

Admission is free and parking is $5 per vehicle. Racing is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

GSJGA holds final WTS event 

The Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association held its final Winter Tournament Series event May 24, at Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club in Sarasota. 

Players competed in both nine-hole and 18-hole divisions. 

Individual winners include: 

Nine-hole: 

  • Boys 10 and Under: Aaron Setiawan (36) 
  • Boys 11 and Over: Matthew Sarris (40)
  • Girls 10 and Under: Julia Lewicki (60)
  • Girls 11 and Over: Jacqueline Putrino (39) 

18-hole: 

  • Boys 12 and Under: Joey Winter (83)
  • Boys 13-15: Brandon Pozzie (76) 
  • Boys 16-18: Kyle Jarrett (78)
  • Girls 12 and Under: Ashleigh Angelo (97)
  • Girls 13-15: Katie Kroos-Roberts (80)

Florida Burn takes third in Perfect Game tourney 

The Florida Burn 2016 Easton Team finished third in the Perfect Game USA 18U WWBA East Memorial Day Classic May 22 through May 25, at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers. 

The Burn advanced to the Final Four of the 77-team tournament before falling to Elite Squad Prime 2-1. 

Local Burn players include Taylor Garris, Gabriel Lozada, Eric Kimsey, Brian Dillingham, Rylee Buckmaster, Tyler Gardner, Trevor Holloway and Brent Killam. 

Other Sarasota area players earning all-tournament honors for their respective travel teams include Sarasota High’s Daniel Pierce. 

Rams sluggers to hold summer camp

Riverview High will hold its 2015 Summer Baseball Camp June 15 through June 18 and June 22 through June 25. 

The camp, which is open to all players from age 8 through entering eighth grade, will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at Twin Lakes Park Field No. 5 in Sarasota. 

Riverview head coach Chuck Antczak, a former professional baseball player with the Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies, will run the camp along with current college players. 

Cost is $150 per week and includes a camp T-shirt. Campers should bring drinks, snacks and sunscreen. Water will be provided.
