Howard Sabin, 89, of Longboat Key, died June 3.

Born Aug. 23, 1925, Mr. Sabin served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and was a prisoner of war in Germany. He received the Purple Heart and other medals including the Legion of Honor from the French government.

A former athlete, Mr. Sabin was a New York state wrestling champion in high school and college and enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling, sailing and skiing with his family. He was a professional engineer with expertise as a corrosion engineer.

Mr. Sabin was preceded in death by his eldest son, Michael Allen. He is survived by his wife his wife of nearly 62 years, Gloria; son, Jonathan; daughter, Ellen Abramson; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and sister, Bevelye Kanneg.

A memorial service was held June 5, at Temple Beth Israel. A burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery.  later date.
