Benefiting Ringling College Library Association | Monday, March 9, at Hyatt Regency Sarasota
Platinum Appreciation Dinner Chair: Chris Lindsay | Town Hall 2015 Chair: Nancy Morgan
The Ringling College Library Association Town Hall Lecture Series hosted its 2015 Platinum Appreciation Dinner featuring honored speaker Supreme Court of the United States Associate Justice Antonin Scalia. More than 610 guests attended the event, themed “justice” with columns of justice representing the Supreme Court and scales of justice representing truth.
Prior to the event, VIPs gathered for a meet and greet with Justice Scalia and the presentation of Scalia’s portrait, an oil painting by Ringling College of Art and Design student Grace Cheung, who graduates from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2016 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in illustration.
“Justice Scalia’s personality was a big inspiration for my painting. Prior to starting it, I had read that Justice Scalia was a humorous individual. I kept this trait in mind and paid close attention to his expression and emotion in the painting in order to convey his jovial personality.” – Grace Cheung
For the remainder of the evening, guests enjoyed a cocktail hour, a video presentation of “Broken,” created by RCAD alumni Bryan Locantore, Garrett O’Neal and Gang Yi, dinner and Justice Scalia’s speech. Scalia discussed his judicial philosophy of originalism, the idea that the Constitution is to be interpreted using the signers’ original intent.
