Nick’s Pick
Hot Club of San Francisco
The best film experience of the season won’t be had at any local cinema but in the intimate confines of the Historic Asolo Theater. At 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, the quintet of Paul Mehling (guitar), Isabelle Fontaine (guitar), Evan Price (violin), Jeff Magidson (guitar) and Sam Rocha (bass), the innovative collective known as the Hot Club of San Francisco, will perform. Part of the Ringling’s “New Stages” contemporary performance art initiative, the quintet will perform songs of gypsy jazz to score two pre-World War I films by Russian stop-motion animator Ladislaw Starewicz, “The Cameraman’s Revenge” and “The Mascot.” The group’s sound is like Starewicz’s films — from a long lost age that feels delightfully contemporary.
