Local players chosen for all-star game

Out-of-Door Academy lacrosse players Kimmy Comito, Taylor Albano and Abby Bannar were selected to play in the US Lacrosse 2015 Gulf Coast High School All-Star game May 3, at IMG Academy. Cardinal Mooney’s Caroline Krupa also was chosen. 

ODA’s Jenna Bloch was selected as an alternate. 

The players represented the South region, which featured players from Sarasota to Naples. 

Suncoast Tennis League wraps up season

The Suncoast Tennis League closed its 2014-15 season with its annual awards luncheon April 7, at the Meadows Country Club. 

More than 300 senior men attended this year’s event, which featured tennis professional-conducted clinics in addition to the luncheon and awards ceremony. Caps were presented to the champions and finalists from each of the 16 age divisions along with plaques engraved with this season’s results. 

The Suncoast Tennis League is home to nearly 1,600 players from 30 clubs in Manatee and Sarasota counties. 

This year’s winners include:

  • 60-1: Payne Park Tennis (champion); Bath & Racquet Club (finalist)
  • 60-2: Longwood Athletic Club (champion); Courtside Tennis Club (finalist)

  • 60-4: Village Walk Tennis (champion); Cedars Tennis Club (finalist)
  • 60-5: United at El Conquistador (champion); Plantation Country Club (finalist)
  • 60-6: University Park Country Club (champion); Sarasota Sports Club (finalist)
  • 60-7: Venice Country Club (champion); Bath & Racquet Club (finalist)

Pirates announce summer workouts

Braden River High recently announced its summer workout program for all incoming freshmen interested in playing football for the Pirates. 

Workouts will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday beginning June 8. There will be no workouts during the week of June 29 through July 5. The first day of official mandatory practice in helmets is Aug. 3. 

The summer program is a combination of running and weightlifting designed to increase strength, conditioning and football knowledge. Those interested also will have a chance to meet the Braden River coaching staff as well as current players.

LWRCC accepting applicants for summer golf camp

Lakewood Ranch Country Club PGA Golf Academy instructor Jon Bullas will host a Lakewood Ranch Golf Summer Camp for children, ages 6 to 16. 

The camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday for eight weekly sessions beginning June 8 and ending Aug. 14. 

Cost is $250 a week per child; three sessions for $700; or $1,800 for the whole summer. A 10% sibling discount is available. There also is a $25 registration fee per child. Lunch, snacks and refreshments will be provided. All campers will received a T-shirt, cap and more. 

During the camp, golfers will receive PGA instruction on full swing, short game, putting, etiquette, rules and play on the course. Participants will spend the last two hours swimming at the Lakewood Ranch Athletic Center.
