Less than a week before Election Day in 2008, then presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama stopped in Sarasota. Before a packed crowd at Ed Smith Stadium, Obama made a plea to voters for a surge of support leading up to Election Day.

Were you in the crowd that day and got a photo of the future president of the United States?

Restoration efforts for the Veterans’ Monument that now serves as the centerpiece at J.D. Hamel Park were underway in 1994. The restoration coincided with the project to connect Main Street to the waterfront.
The monument was originally the base of a traffic light in Five Points in 1917 but was moved to its current location in on Gulfstream Avenue in1954. As part of restorations, the bronze plaques were refurbished, and a sitting wall and planter were added.
