The Powel Crosley Estate would've been just to Josephine Baker's taste. The iconic American-born French entertainer transcended race, gender and genres in the 1920s to become one of the most glamorous and well-known performers in Europe.

It was only fitting then, that the Asolo Repertory Theatre, in preparation for the world-premiere of its musical about her life, chose the location to provide a sneak-peek of the Broadway-bound production.

"Josephine" runs May 6 through 29, but this morning, a select few caught an early glimpse of the performance on the estate's back patio. Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards welcomed the production's creative and musical team, as well as producer Kenneth Waissman, director/choreographer Joey McKneely and the musical's cast — including the lead, Grammy-nominated singer Deborah Cox.

Following speeches from Edwards, McKneely and Waissman, guests were treated to a live performance by Cox, as well as Kevin Earley and members of the male ensemble.

"It feels like everything this season has been leading up to 'Josephine,'" says Edwards. "Our audiences have all gone on this journey with us, exploring the American Character project and what it means to be an American. Now, with this world premiere, everyone is ready to acknowledge the role Josephine Baker played, especially as someone who was never fully appreciated in her own country."
