Sheets were lifted to reveal new caped crusaders for Southeastern Guide Dogs Tuesday evening at the State of the Arts gallery.
The Superheroes on Parade pack grew by 12 with the unveiling of additional statues for the campaign that compares the superhero role that guide dogs play in giving independence to their graduates.
Among the batch unveiled Tuesday was one designed by artist David Steiner for the Observer Media Group. "Newsy" was welcomed into the superhero family complete with a messenger bag strapped to his cape to deliver the word of the four local Observers.
“I wanted it to talk to the kind of retro days of newspapers because it’s a community paper with community values,” said Steiner. “He’s a throwback to the retro paperboy.”
An official website including a map of where to find each statue will be launched May 2. Members of the public are invited to vote for their favorite sculpture and to share photos on Instagram using #SuperheroesOnTheStreet. The contest runs until Sept. 18 with winners to be announced at the Sept. 24 Gala.
