Charlotte Fortunato, 78, of Longboat Key, died March 28.
She was born in Beaver Falls, Pa., grew up in Perth Amboy, N.J. and became a long-time resident of Toms River, N.J. She was a graduate of Rutgers University School of Nursing and started her nursing career at St. Vincent Hospital, in Newark N.J., where she met her husband, the love of her life, Dr. Charles Fortunato. The couple settled in Toms River, where they opened a medical practice and started a family.
During their years in Toms River, the couple enjoyed the friendship and camaraderie of many close friends and acquaintances. Her cooking skills drew countless guests to her kitchen and dining room table. She was a gracious hostess and confidante. Together, she and Charles traveled the world and delighted in experiencing different cultures and people. She was particularly drawn to ocean sunsets and warm-water breezes, which brought her to Longboat Key many decades ago.
Ms. Fortunato derived great joy from spending time with her grandchildren, who remember her warm and vibrant personality in addition to her excellent storytelling and homework-helper skills. She was a kind, loving and gentle person who will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Dr. Charles Fortunato; her brother, Bert Sathmary; and her sisters, Madge Tricules and Irma Doros. She is survived by her loving children, David Fortunato, of Toms River, Lillian Geswelli and her husband, Jim, of New Vernon, N.J., and Paula Fortunato-Redstone, of Beverly Hills, Calif.; three grandchildren; and her extended family and friends.
Private services were held April 2.
