July 20

Missing Garbage
12:31 p.m. — 1000 block of Bogey Lane
Larceny:  A woman called police to report that her $75 gray trash can was missing. She told officers she left her residence in the morning, and when she returned it was missing. The woman’s neighbor’s trash can was also not where it usually was. She said she searched up and down nearby streets, but could not locate either trash can. Officers closed the case after they could not find the receptacle or security cameras.

Ruff Timing
4:19 p.m. — 5300 block of GMD
Code Enforcement: A resident called to report that were two dogs walking on the beach. When officers arrived, they found dogs in the water. Police told the owners, who said they were visiting from Georgia, that it is a violation of town code to have dogs on the beach.

July 22

Phantom Purchases
3:39 p.m. — 500 block of Cutter Lane
Identity Theft: A man received a letter from PayPal welcoming him to the service and indicating he had purchased two items for $1,149.46. Representatives from PayPal said they couldn’t give the man any information about where the packages were delivered and that he had to file a police report for them to investigate.

July 23

Major Loss
12:34 p.m. — 4700 block of GMD
Larceny: A woman called police to report that when she returned from her Longboat Key vacation to Orlando, she noticed her cosmetic and jewelry bag was missing. She called the hotel manager, who said he could not find it. The bag contained a $2,500 ring, along with her gold necklace, silver pendant, silver watch and wedding ring.

No Dumping
3:21 p.m. — 500 block of Gunwale Lane
Dumping: A man reported that someone was illegally dumping grass clippings into a canal. Officers responded, but could not find any suspects or locate any grass in the waterway.

Gone Fishin’
10:09 p.m. — Longboat Pass Bridge
Code Enforcement: A boat captain called police to report that there were several people fishing between “No Fishing” signs on the bridge. Officers asked the men to leave, and they left the scene without incident.

July 25

Easy Steal
8:50 a.m. — 3200 block of GMD
Larceny: A woman reported that her bicycle had been stolen from the rack at her condominium complex. The $250 mountain bike was not locked, and she did not have the serial number. Police were unable to locate the bicycle.

Hole in the Road
5:01 p.m. — 5900 block of Emerald Harbor Drive
Public Service: A man found a 2-foot-wide hole in the road, and called police to report the possible start of a sinkhole. Officers determined the hole was fresh and could have been caused by a heavy vehicle.

July 26

Boat bully
9:22 a.m. — 0 block of Linley Street
Public Service: A man called to report that a charter boat approached him on a public dock, and the captain asked him to move. Police said it has been an ongoing problem with the specific charter boat asking people to move out of the way while it docks. Officers had advised the captain he was not allowed to do that.
