When the Alfred R. Goldstein Library opens this fall, Ringling College students will get more than a new state-of-the-art library and creative hub — they'll also have an opportunity to see a piece of their original artwork reproduced in a mural spanning three floors of the building's interior.
The college is currently accepting submissions for original artwork by both current students and alumni to be considered for the library mural, which will also be visible from the building's exterior. Any easily reproduced visual medium is accepted, including sketchbook art, digital renderings, painting, collage, mixed media, photography and printmaking.
The winning art could be a single work that would span the building's three floors on all four walls or four individual three-story works to adorn one wall each. Winners will be awarded $1,500 per side or $6,000 total.
Once the winning work is selected, Ringling College will consult with the artist to obtain specifications before teaming up with Trinity Graphics to create a vinyl reproduction of the artwork to be installed over several weeks in the late fall.
Artists can submit until Sept. 15.
Campus and Community Engagement Manager Tim Jaeger says it's a unique opportunity for students in that the final result will be highly visible as one of the largest murals in the city and something the college will also reproduce in its marketing materials.
"The mural will be one of the cornerstones of this library," he says. "Beyond the architecture, the art will be another component of this building that will really define its style and become part of Ringling history."
