Humane Society takes in dogs from Louisiana floods

While animal shelters in Louisiana are dealing with animals displaced by the flood, they’re seeking help from partners in other states. 

The Humane Society of Sarasota County is one of those partners hoping to find homes for the displace animals. On Aug. 19 HSSC took in 11 puppies and two adults from the Acadiana Animal Aid located in Carencro, La. 

The shipment was made possible with help from Loving Friends Transport, which transported the animals in crates from Louisiana to Sarasota, in addition to the Golden Retriever Rescue of Mid Florida. 

Another group from Acadiana Animal Aid arrived Saturday, Aug. 27. A group of 17 puppies all under the age of six months old arrived and are being screened for ringworm before they can be put up for adoption.

“As soon as more kennel space opens up or we can take anymore we will do what we can to continue assisting,” said Nalani Simpson, Communications Coordinator for HSSC. 

Simpson estimates that if a dog is infected with ringworm it could take five weeks before they will be available for adoption.
