Lakewood walks off with win

The Lakewood Ranch softball team beat district rival Sarasota 3-2 Feb. 23.

Lakewood Ranch junior Denali Schappacher hit a walk-off line drive to left field to propel the softball team to a 3-2 victory versus district rival Sarasota Feb. 23. 

Logan Newton pitched a complete game, striking out six, to earn the win on the mound. She also hit a solo shot to center field in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game at 1-1. 

In the bottom of the eighth inning, junior shortstop Kinsey Goelz hit a leadoff double. Mackenzie Meyer followed with a RBI single to tie the game at 2-2. 

In the bottom of the ninth inning, senior catcher Maddie Biggs drew a leadoff walk. Two batters later, Schappacher drove in pinch runner Katie Stincer for the win. 

Schappacher went 3-for-5 and Goelz went 3-for-4 to lead the way for Lakewood at the plate. 

Sarasota had the bases loaded three different times and was unable to score. 

Lakewood returns to district action at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 versus Palmetto.
