Googly-eyes and toothpicks transformed ordinary slices of strawberry and apple into butterflies in the Freedom Elementary cafeteria this morning.
Fifth-grade students in the Technology Student Association blueprinted and built insect-themed scenes from fruits and vegetables as part of a Manatee County School District competition, Play with Your Fruits and Vegetable Day. Thirteen elementary schools throughout the district competed in the 6th annual competition. The winning design at each school goes on to be judged among the rest of the winners from other schools.
"Vegetables are a pressure — 'you have to eat your fruits and veggies,'" said Skye Grundy, the district nutrition specialist. "This lets kids touch and feel, and not be forced to try them."
