'Godspell Jr.'

This performance tells the story of a group of disciples who help Jesus tell parables in the form of songs, games and comedy. The story of Jesus' life and a message of tolerance and love are told through songs that range in style from pop to vaudeville.

 

Peanut Butter and Jelly to Fight Hunger

This event marks the end of a two-week donation drive with All Faiths Food Bank, benefiting children who go hungry when school is out. Anyone who brings peanut butter, jelly or any other non-perishable food item by the end of the week will receive a ticket for a free PB&J Pale Ale at Big Top on Friday. 

 

Spyderwulf, Hail Dale and Birdtribe

Who Ya Gonna Call? Art Show

The Mockingbird Tattoo Company presents a family-friendly Ghostbusters-themed art show and film screening. Local draft beer catered by The Beer Box will be available at the event.

 

HAMS and JDub's Homebrew Collaboration Tasting

2 to 4 p.m. at JDub's Brewing Co., 1215 Mango Ave.

JDub's has collaborated with members of the Homebrewers Association of Manatee and Sarasota to enable several home brewers to add their own twist on a JDub's wheat ale. The results of this collaboration will be presented at this tasting event, located in the JDub's beer garden. Homebrewers and JDub's brewers will discuss the results of the experiment with each other and the public. Tickets will be available for beer samples; all donations received from these tickets will benefit The Alzheimer's Association.

American Idol finalist and Bradenton High graduate Sam Woolf performs two sets at Blue Rooster. Only 19 years old, Woolf is known for his emotional compositions and voice. Reservations recommended.

HD At the Opera House: Shakespeare's 'The Adventures of Pericles'

The Sarasota Opera House shows a film of the Stratford Festival's music-filled production of William Shakespeare's epic play. "The Adventures of Pericles" tells the story of a prince whose life is dramatically changed by two storms. Critics have praised Evan Buliung's performance as Pericles for his ability to convincingly portray the character both in his youth and in old age.

 

MONDAY, JULY 11

Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Burgers Without Borders

Following the recent fire that damaged J.R.'s Old Packinghouse Café, this burger-and-beer fundraiser will benefit the efforts to re-open the restaurant. Enjoy a burger and one of Cock & Bull Pub's 40 draft beers. 20 percent of the cover charges will go toward the benefit.

McCurdy's Comedy Theatre is running a Cards Against Humanity tournament this summer, and it's time for the second of three qualifying rounds. Teams of 4-6 can compete to qualify for the September championship round. All teams must be registered in advance with the McCurdy's box office.

 

WEDNESDAY, JULY 13

Moxie Productions Presents: FayRoy, Selectric and Morgan Soltes

Moxie Productions presents Fayroy, a St. Pete-based folk, psychedelic and surf rock act, Selectric, a high-energy rock band and Morgan Soltes, a local one-man folk-rock act who makes creative use of loops.

 

Jazz Meets Art with the Old Souls Jazz Quartet

The Jazz Club of Sarasota, in conjunction with Art Center Sarasota, presents an art show and jazz concert by the Old Souls Jazz Quartet. Artwork, including paintings and photography, will be on view at 5 p.m., and the concert begins at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments available.

 

'How I Got Over: A Tribute to Mahalia Jackson'

Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe performs a tribute to the renowned "Queen of Gospel" Mahalia Jackson and other great gospel singers. WBTT founder Nate Jacobs created and directs this tribute, in which singers bring passion and emotion to joyful gospel classics such as "Move On Up a Little Higher" and "His Eye Is On the Sparrow." Runs through Aug. 14.
