With their life jackets buckled and the wind fluttering against them, the campers partaking in Sarasota Youth Sailing summer camp headed out to sail the bay.
Through the camp, participants learn the ins and outs of sailing, including steering and rigging, while also learning valuable life lessons in teamwork, respect and confidence.
Campers have two options when registering for camp; full-day sessions for one week, or half-day sessions for two weeks. Sarasota Youth Sailing offers the camp for 10 weeks during the summer, and one more session is still open for registration for experienced sailors. Executive director Alana O’Reilly said the camp sees about 350 kids over the course of the ten weeks from all different areas. O’Reilly said kids come Venice, Bradenton, and even out of state while on vacation.
Participants must be at least 5-years-old to register, but the camp is open to teenagers until they turn 18. The campers are both novice and experienced sailors.
