Victor DeRenzi knighted by Italian government

The Sarasota Opera can add another impressive achievement to its growing list of accolades. Following the historic completion of the Verdi Cycle in March, the Italian government has honored Maestro Victor DeRenzi with the distinction of knighthood. 

The title, Cavaliere dell’ordine della Stella d’Italia, or Knight of the order of the Star of Italy, recognizes people who have helped spread Italian culture worldwide. DeRenzi's leadership throughout the 28-year cycle, during which the Opera performed the complete works of Italian composer Giuseppe Verdi, was the driving force behind the distinction. 

“As a musician, and a citizen of Italy and the United States, it means a great deal to me to have been invested as a ‘Cavaliere dell’ordine della Stella d'Italia’ which acknowledges my devotion to Italian music and the completion of Sarasota Opera’s Verdi Cycle,” said Maestro DeRenzi in a release. “I have loved Italy since I was a child, and its arts have been at the center of my life and have given me constant enjoyment.”

DeRenzi was awarded by the Italian Consul General in Miami, Dr. Gloria Marina Bellelli at the Italian National Day Celebration June 1, which commemorated the 70th Anniversary of the establishment of the Italian Republic.
