Mustangs swing past Hurricanes

The Lakewood Ranch softball team cruised to a 14-1 district victory versus Manatee March 1 in a game that was shortened to five innings. 

Logan Newton earned the win on the mound before turning the ball over to Kailey Christian in the fourth inning. 

Maddie Biggs went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs in the second inning, three runs and 5 RBI to lead the way for the Mustangs at the plate. Morgan Cummins went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the fourth inning, three runs and a pair of RBI. Christian also added a home run in the second inning. 

With the win, Lakewood improves to 10-1 and 5-0 in the district. The Mustangs clinched the No. 1 seed in the Class 8A-District 8 tournament. The Mustangs return to district action March 3, at Sarasota.
