Church of the Redeemer celebrated the 20th anniversary of the arrival the Rev. Richard Marsden to the parish during its March 6 Mass.

A parishwide, surprise celebration included members of Marsden’s confirmation classes from the last 20 years marching down the aisles each with a banner representing each year's class.

“There are so many more things that I could say about him, like mentioning his love of war stories in his preaching, but suffice it to say that Linda and I treasure the friendship between us and him and Gail,” said the Rev. Fredrick Robinson during the Mass.

Downton fun

Resident Pam Bell Swain and her ladies threw a farewell "Downton Abbey" fit for a countess.

The show, which became a pop culture phenomenon after six seasons, aired its finale episode Sunday evening on PBS. The period drama that brought us characters such as Maggie Smith’s Dowager Countess Lady Violet Crowley and her dry quips like: “Vulgarity is no substitute for wit.”

Swain and her ladies dressed the part to celebrate the occasion with their best 1920s English attire. The menu for the affair included macaroons, lemon square bars and scones.

Hardwood hustle

Basketball fans tuned in Sunday for the showdown on the hardwood against Kobe Bryant’s Los Angeles Lakers and Stephen Curry’s Golden State Warriors. Sarasota had a preview of the match up between Lakers fan and Temple Emanu-El Rabbi Brenner Glickman against Warriors fan Gabe Yamada, 8.

The two wore their favorite jerseys representing the teams to the Purim Pandemonium event on Sunday, March 6 where they playfully teased one another about their teams.

Yamada, who plays point guard for his Suncoast Basketball League, says Curry inspires him.
“He’s just really good, and I like three-point shooters,” Yamada said.
