As of this week the Campaign Against Summer Hunger for All Faiths Food Bank has collected 827,000 pounds of food with five days left until the May 15 deadline.
The final push comes Saturday, May 14 with the National Association of Letter Carriers 24th annual “Stamp Out Hunger,” food drive. When postal workers go out on their routes Saturday residents are encouraged to leave bags with nonperishable food to be collected by their mailboxes.
In the previous year the event collected 103,000 pounds of food for the Campaign Against Summer Hunger.
“We are so fortunate to be a recipient of the food collected by our letter carriers, and to a live in such a caring community,” said Sandra Frank, All Faiths Food Bank CEO in a release. “This year, as a result of the Campaign Against Summer Hunger, we anticipate more participation than ever among residents. The Letter Carriers Food Drive is a big piece of what keeps us going through the lean summer months,”
Throughout the week residents will receive information and a provided bag to use for the food drive. The most commonly needed food items include peanut butter, jelly, canned tuna, ham, and chicken, beans, and powdered milk.
