With the anniversary of the attacks of 9/11 quickly approaching, members of the community are invited to honor the victims during the Standing With Our Fallen, a 9/11 15-Year Commemoration.

“It’s a special day for people to find some closure,” said the Rev. Tom Pfaff, Sarasota Ministerial Association president.
Part of finding that closure at the event will come in the form of recognizing the victims of the attacks individually.

Before the service, attendees will be asked to “adopt a fallen” from a list of victims of the attacks. The goal is to have all 2,977 names represented in the audience during the Sarasota County Fire Department’s tolling of the bell and again during a performance of “Amazing Grace” by the Sarasota Military Academy bagpipe players.

The opportunity to honor a victim is also open to individuals, businesses, religious congregations and organizations. Attendees can select from the list of names located at “adopt a fallen”.

At 6:20 p.m., attendees who have adopted a fallen can place a photo of the person they are representing in a gallery of photos surrounding the American flag of flowers.

“It’s absolutely incredible,” Pfaff said. “If someone adopts someone, then when they come, they’re really going to have a different sense for the significance.”
