On Sept. 10, 2002, the Longboat Key Public Works Department lined Gulf of Mexico Drive with nearly 3,000 American flags to remember those who lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks. For the next 13 years (minus one due to a storm), the town has carried on the tradition.
This year is no exception. At the end of this week, Public Works will again line the streets with flags to commemorate the 15-year anniversary of 9/11.
“We received a very positive response,” Public Works Director Juan Florensa said of the tradition. “It’s an expectation that we have, and our staff enjoys doing it.”
