Suncoast Sports Club coaches arrived at Glebe Park Monday morning for practice to find a series of circular ruts had been cut into their fields over night.
Suncoast Sports Club Inc. runs local sports programs in the park behind St. Michael the Archangel Church on Siesta Key. Vice President of Operations Stephen Weeks suspects an area youth with a four wheeler is responsible for the damage and he’s concerned the vandalism will escalate.
“What I’m worried about is he is going to come back and hit big field where the older kids play,” Weeks said.
Weeks alerted the Sarasota County Sheriff Department of the issue, but did not file an incident report. He is now offering a $500 reward to anyone who has any information that may help authorities identify the perpetrator.
According to Weeks, the park has had issues in the past regarding vandalism in the bathrooms in addition to a similar incident involving a four wheeler tearing up the grass near the retention pond.
Weeks said he understands the park can’t be monitored all the time, but he hopes increasing the public’s awareness of the problem will decrease the probability that a another incident will happen in the future.
“They can’t leave a deputy there all the time because Siesta Key is a really big place,” Weeks said. “But if more people know about it they can watch out for it.”
