'Music of Our Time I'

The Sarasota Orchestra explores modern classical music with a diverse program, including "TraInspOrt," a jazzy, rock-influenced work by Theodore Burkali; "Six Bagatelles," by Webern, a short piece that proved his importance as a composer, and "Voice of the Whale," by George Crumb, a wild, avant-garde piece of music. Also on the program is "Thirteen Ways," by American composer Thomas Albert, which combines poetry and dream-like music.

Hip-hop heads and ’90s nostalgics rejoice — the Starlite Room's new weekly event, Throwback Thursdays, features classic hip-hop and soul music by DJ Moka, DJ Imminent and DJ Galati. This week's event also features a late-night, vegan-friendly menu.

Venice Beach Party: Music, Beer and Bands

A part of Venice Main Street's "Lovin’ Our Locals" event series, this party features free music right on Venice Beach. Local food and beer vendors will be on hand to accompany ska and reggae music by local bands Pressure Dem, Treedom, Jah Movement and Wild Root.

 

Upholding Tradition: Tattoo Art by Karl Boardman

Tattoo fads come and go. But traditional American tattoo art, pioneered and popularized by artists such as Norman "Sailor Jerry" Collins, has stood the test of time. Karl Boardman, a local artist who apprenticed in San Francisco before recently moving back, is pays homage to the traditional style, adding his own fresh touch. See his original art on display at Solid, as well as the unveiling of a new collaborative shirt with Clothesline Creative. 

 

Art, Rhymes and Beer: One Year Anniversary

Art, Rhymes and Beer celebrates one year of live art, hip-hop and craft beer at JDub's Brewing Co. A silent auction of artwork by participating artists will benefit Any Given Child Sarasota. Artists will create live in the beer garden; musicians will perform and local businesses and vendors will be on site, selling food and other merchandise. 

 

Wolf-Face, Caffiends, The Anti Donts and Sketchie

iconcept Jr.

You've seen iconcept — now see what happens when the spotlight is on kids. The inaugural iconcept Jr. fashion show features emerging artists and designers, ages 8 through 18, who will create outfits using unconventional materials. The event will showcase more than 30 designs using recycled, repurposed and many unusual materials and will raise funds to benefit Art Center Sarasota’s youth art camps the Slice of Art Outreach Program offered free to public schools.

 

HD at the Opera House: Shakespeare's 'The Tempest'

Diego Figueiredo, a rising star among the world’s jazz guitarists, takes the stage in Sarasota. Known for his technique, timing and imagination, the internationally acclaimed guitarist performs a fusion of Brazilian music and traditional jazz.

Spice Pop-Up Restaurant: The Modern Taco

'The Sunshine Boys'

This comedy, by Neil Simon, tells the story of The Sunshine Boys. They’ve performed together 30,000 times and can’t stand each other anymore. A grudging reunion brings them back together, along with a flood of memories, miseries and laughs. Runs through Oct. 16

 

Wednesday, Sept. 28

'Gypsy'

Loosely based on the memories of famous strip-tease artist Gypsy Rose Lee, this 1959 classic musical follows the life of the "ultimate show-business mother" Rose, and her daughters Gypsy and June. The musical is considered one of the greatest 20th-century American musicals. Runs through Oct. 16.

 

'To Have and Uphold'

Following the sold-out run of this show in March, Moving Ethos Dance returns to Urbanite Theatre with "To Have and Uphold." The contemporary dance performance, directed by Leah Verier-Dunn, explores the exhausting nature of routine and obligation. Show runs through Oct. 1.
