Henrietta Barkey and Dora Coates died.

+Henrietta Barkey

Henrietta Barkey, 79, of Sarasota and Longboat Key, died Sept. 19. 

She was born in Paris and immigrated to the United States at age 5 with her parents, Max and Johanna Schloss.

The family settled in New York, where Henrietta attended The High School of Music and Art and Barnard College and Columbia University. She was fluent in three languages and enjoyed art, history, literature, food and performance.

Together, Mrs. Barkey and her husband, Allen, ran Barkey Importing Co., which was well-respected in the food industry. The couple had two sons, Jonathan and David, whom they raised in Rochester, N.Y. Eventually, the couple moved to Longboat Key.

Mrs. Barkey is remembered as caring, creative, energetic, outgoing and eternally youthful. Following her husband’s death in 2011, she remained active in all aspects of life physically, socially and civically. She traveled to Europe, Cuba and Africa. Her last overseas trip was in 2015 to the United Kingdom, where she revisited her youth and spent time with family.

Mrs. Barkey was preceded in death by her husband and parents. She is survived by sons, Jonathan and David; daughter-in-law, Lauren; granddaughters, Cara and Chloe; and brother Stanley.

+Dora Coates

Dora Coates, 91, of Rochester, N.Y., died Sept. 19. 

She was born in Dansville, N.Y., on Feb. 25, 1925, to the late Walter and Mae McTarnaghan.

She was a graduate of Dansville High School and then attended Geneseo Teachers College where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree. In 1950 she married William J. Coates. Dora taught in the Rochester area before she began raising her family. Later, she taught eighth grade at Dansville Junior High School.

Following Williams’ death, Dora moved to the Lakeville Estates in New York where she enjoyed playing card games. Since 1998, Dora has spent her winters in the Longboat Key area and at Manasota Beach Gardens.

Dora was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; brother, Donald McTarnaghan; brother-in-law Peter Coates, sister-in-law Lucille Sharrow; daughter-in-law Kandice Coates.

She is survived by sons Edward, Martin and Matthew; daughters Deborah Coates and Susan Kell; 11 grandchildren; and sisters-in-law Lois McTarnaghan and Dr. Helen Smith.
