Lakewood Ranch's Vitale to receive Wooden Citizenship Cup

The award is given to "outstanding role models" in the world of sports.

Lakewood Ranch resident and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee Dick Vitale is being recognized once again. 

Vitale will receive the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup at a ceremony Tuesday night in Atlanta. The award is presented by Athletes for a Better World, a non-profit organization with aims on "changing the the culture of American sports," according to its website. The award is given to outstanding role models in the sports world.

This will be the 13th-annual presentation of the award, with past winners including Pat Summitt, Jack Nicklaus, Peyton Manning, Mia Hamm and Cal Ripken, Jr. 

Vitale serves on the Board of Directors of The V Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for cancer and founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano. 

Vitale called receiving the award "a special honor."
