East County Athlete of the Week: 04.19.17

Ali Yawn is a senior pitcher and outfielder on Braden River's softball team. She is committed to play for Palm Beach Atlantic University next season. On April 13, Yawn threw a three-hitter in the Pirates' 3-0 win over Sarasota High, and also had two hits with an RBI. 

When did you start playing softball?

I've been playing since I was 6, so, that's what, 12 years? I'm 18. I originally started with dance and soccer like every kid does. Both my parents (Buddy Yawn and Carol Yawn) played baseball and softball growing up, so I got into it that way. 

What is the appeal of softball to you?

I think being around the girls. I love winning, I love the excitement, how fast the action of the game is. Everything is so quick. When a game is super close, that's when it's the most exciting. 

What is your favorite softball memory?

I used to play for a travel team called Team Mizuno with (coach) Mike Morgan. We would do these crazy showcase tournaments. We would fly across the country. There is a showcase out in Colorado called the Fireworks Triple Crown. We played in it two summers ago, and we won the whole thing. There were more than 200 teams. 

What is your best skill on the field?

I'm fast. I'm able to track the ball in the outfield. I can get on base with a bunt. As a pitcher, I'm good at movement. I throw about 60-62 mph, so usually my movement is what comes in handy when I am pitching. 

Why do you wear No. 4?

It was just the size they had. (Laughs). It fit me. Actually, though, when I go down to Palm Beach Atlantic, I'll be No. 4 down there. I'm trying to carry it on since I had good seasons wearing it here. 

What is your favorite food?

Pasta. Any type of pasta. I also really like Cheesecake Factory (in general), that's probably my favorite restaurant. 

What will your major be at Palm Beach Atlantic?

Elementary education. I like working with kids. I wasn't going to go into the medical field, so I was like, I need to find something that works. 

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

Work to your abilities. I'm small. I have to put my strength into everything I do. It has not come easy for me, honestly. My parents and coaches tell me that. 

When was the time you laughed the hardest?

I feel like I laugh most in the moment. It could be some dry humor or something. In-the-moment stuff gets me and makes me laugh hard. Spontaneous stuff.

... Hard-working. I have to work hard in school. In order to keep my commitment with Palm Beach Atlantic, I have to have good grades. In order to stay on this team, I have to have good grades. I actually go to tutoring once a week for math. Also on the field, there are always people trying to one-up each other. You just have to prove you are the best.
