In a pickle over courts?

About a year ago, you could not find one pickleball court in GreyHawk Landing.

With the sport becoming more popular, residents requested a pickleball court and the CDD catered to the residents' wishes, putting pickleball lines on the tennis courts for the two sports to share.

Pushback from tennis players is prompting change again. They want pickleball to have its own, separate court.

CDD supervisors are considering a different kind of sharing — pickleball on the basketball courts.

Installing separate courts adjacent to the clubhouse may be cost prohibitive, between $34,000 and $45,000, said Ollie Kyte, chairman of GreyHawk’s CDD board.

“What we are considering is adding two pickleball courts to the existing basketball court, but then we would have to get some type of restricted barrier for containing the pickleballs,” Kyte said.

The decision is not yet final.

To execute the conversion on the basketball court, the CDD board would have to pay for the addition of the pickleball lines on the court, as well as a short fence around the court to contain the pickleballs.

The board predicts this would cost a little more than $1,000.

Supervisors have created a time log for the basketball courts to better gauge how often the courts are used and when they are used.

“We do not want to encounter the same issues we dealt with with the avid tennis players when we wanted to put pickleball on the tennis courts,” said Jeffrey Evans, assistant secretary of GreyHawk CDD.

Supervisors expect to discuss the topic again at future meetings.
