James Rivera, 16, will be a junior basketball player at Lakewood Ranch High next semester. Coach Jeremy Schiller said he expects Rivera to be a big contributor in the fall.
When did you start playing basketball?
I really started in sixth grade. When I was younger I used to play soccer, too, but I quit soccer and focused on basketball.
What is the appeal of basketball to you?
I guess because I’m so fast, I like the fast pace, especially with coach Schiller. That’s his idea of a game (going up-tempo).
What is your best skill on the court?
Definitely, I think, defense. Honestly, I hate defensive drills. I think everyone does. But on defense, I feel like I can be such a threat to people.
Do you have goals for yourself?
I want to be a part of the main lineup and rotation.
What other sports do you play?
I’ll be getting into cross-country soon and then track. I’m hoping to do a lot of big things in track.
What is your favorite food?
This dinner my mom (Susan Rivera) makes. It’s like, rice and chopped meat. The way she spices the meat, it’s so good.
Do you have a dream vacation spot?
Either Hawaii or Paris. Paris, because I’ve always wanted to see the Eiffel Tower, and there are so many places to go in Paris. I’ve heard about a lot of good restaurants there, too. Hawaii, who doesn’t want to go to Hawaii?
What is your favorite subject in school?
Math. Definitely math. Not a lot of people like math, so if someone is having trouble with it, then I’ll go help them.
What is the best piece of advice you have received?
Always keep your head up and keep moving forward.
Finish this sentence: “James Rivera is ... ”
... Determined. I’ve always wanted to play varsity basketball. I really want to do something great in track one day. I want to be like my brother (state champion John Rivera). I’m willing to get up early and go to practices and do whatever it takes.
