Sands Robnick, 74, has played in the Sarasota Senior Softball Association for five years.
When did you start playing baseball?
I played back in Milwaukee. We used to have what they called a parks league. It was for junior high-age kids.
What position did you play?
I always played either outfield or catcher.
What is the appeal of softball to you now?
I come out here three or four days a week at a minimum, and get to play baseball with a bunch of great old guys. I want to wear myself out, not rust out.
What is your best skill as a player?
Well, I normally play outfield, but I just had three eye surgeries, so now I’ve started pitching. Pitching prolongs your career in this league.
What is your favorite softball memory?
The way I would answer that is, when I’m at home and there’s not a ballgame, I’m going crazy.
What is the best vacation you have taken?
A dive trip to Belau. It’s out in the middle of the Pacific, 600 miles east of the Philippines.
What is your favorite food?
Basically, all I eat is dead animals and green stuff.
What is your favorite TV show?
The only show I follow religiously is “Survivor.” God, if I was a younger person, I’d love to be on that show.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
There’s nothing wrong with the golden rule. Don’t be a jerk. If you can avoid it, just live your life and don’t be a jerk.
Finish this sentence: "Sands Robnick is ... "
... Just a gray-haired old guy having the time of his life.
