Camie Lizardi, 16, will be a senior at Braden River in the fall. The girls soccer defender was named to Puerto Rico's U20 girls soccer team on July 6, and will play her first game for the country against Bonaire on July 19. She is also committed to the University of South Florida.
When did you start playing soccer?
Ever since I could walk. Both of my brothers (Christian and Justin Lizardi) played soccer, so it was a big part of the family.
What is the appeal of soccer to you?
It has shaped my whole life. It's led me to meet so many people and venture out farther than I ever would have without soccer. Honestly, it's just my life. It's what I do.
What is your best skill on the field?
My air game. Heading, stuff like that. Most of the girls are afraid to get up and head the ball, but I'm not one of those people. I'm always the first person to win every air ball.
How did you get involved with the Puerto Rico U20 team?
My dad (Luis Lizardi) is from Puerto Rico, so I was eligible. I went there (Bayamon) at the beginning of June for four days to try out, with 35 other girls. The coaches asked me to come back for another tryout at the end of June (in Salinas). There were another 35 girls there. From those two camps, they made a roster.
Had you considered the possibility of playing for Puerto Rico before?
No. I always wanted to play internationally for the United States, but it's such a bigger pool (of players). I just didn't feel as connected with the United States as I did with Puerto Rico, so getting this opportunity was a really big honor for me. Most of my dad's family still lives there.
What was your reaction when you found out you made the team?
It was awesome. I didn't think I would make the team. It was the greatest honor I could have ever had, to be a part of it.
Do you have any future goals for yourself?
I picked USF because the coaches always turn girls into pros, so I want to go play pro somewhere in Spain, somewhere like that, after college.
What hobbies do you have?
I participate a lot in my church (Bayside Community Church).
What is the best piece of advice you have received?
Just to learn from your setbacks. Don't use them to put yourself down, use them as motivation to keep going. I've been set back a bunch of times in soccer, and I kept going and going, and now I'm on an international team.
Finish this sentence: "Camie Lizardi is ... "
