Gracie Weyant, 11, attends Pine View School and swims for the Sarasota YMCA Sharks. She won her division of the girls 100-meter breaststroke (1:17.59) July 14 at the Florida Long Course Age Group Championships.

When did you first start swimming?

Four years ago. I kind of got put in it by my mom (laughs). Now I really like it.

What is the appeal of swimming to you?

I like the work that you have to do. I like challenging myself.

What is your best stroke in the pool?

Breaststroke. I had to work at it. When I was little, I was a lot better at backstroke. Coach (Sherwood) Watts helped me a lot, with pull-outs and kick timing.

Do you have any swimming goals for yourself?

This season, I want to make the YMCA Nationals cuts.

Do you have a favorite movie?

Probably the "Harry Potter" series, all of them.

What hobbies do you have?

I do like to read fiction books. My favorite is probably "The Hunger Games."

What is your dream vacation spot?

Bora Bora. It's really pretty there.

What is your favorite subject in school?

Science. I really like learning about outer space.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

Just be yourself, in whatever situation. My mom (Kristi Cardoni-Weyant) tell me that. A lot of people will try to make you who you're not.

Finish this sentence: "Gracie Weyant is ... "

... Hard working. I just really like to work hard.
