Sarasota Athlete of the Week: 06.15.17

Jamar Johnson is a rising senior defensive back at Riverview High. He holds scholarship offers from Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Iowa State, among other schools.

How long have you played football?

I’ve been playing since I was honestly 3 years old, but officially since 8 years old on a tackle team. I wasn’t allowed to play flag (football) in my family, so I went straight to tackle. I’ve loved it ever since I was a kid, playing with my cousins and stuff.

What is the appeal of football to you?

I just like the competitiveness of it. I like to hit people. I like the hype, too. The hype of doing something good. When everybody gets hype, that’s cool.

What is your best skill on the field?

Getting to the ball, at all times. Every play, I’m full speed to the ball. I’m at least around the play, every play. That’s what I try to do, and I do it.

What is your favorite football memory?

The first round of the playoffs, against Olympia, I caught two picks, recovered a fumble for a touchdown. I had a pass breakup for someone else to get a pick, and I had an 80-yard kick return to start the game. That was my best game.

Are any schools standing out to you in your recruitment?

Right now, I’m really liking Virginia Tech, Western Michigan, Wake Forest, Purdue, Western Kentucky, Marshall, Iowa State and Florida International. No one favorite right now, I’m going on a couple visits soon.

Why do you wear No. 8?

My two favorite players in college at the time I chose it were (defensive backs) Jalen Ramsey and Karl Joseph. They both wore No. 8, and I felt like it was only right for me, since I play defensive back. I just like how they play.

What is your favorite food?

I like pizza. Papa John’s pizza. I get pineapple, ham and bacon.

What is your favorite TV show?

I like “Last Chance U” on Netflix.

What hobbies do you have?

Most of the time, I just work out. I go to the beach a lot, too, Siesta Key.

Do you have a dream vacation spot?

One day, I’m going to go to Hawaii. I just like the beach vibe, the vibe of Hawaii, every time I see it. I like Siesta Key, so I want to go to a bigger island.

What is the best piece of advice you have received?

My uncle (Thaddeus Johnson Sr.) told me, “Whatever you do, make sure you’re the best at it. Do your best at it at all times. Never let anyone tell you what you can’t do.”
