Sarasota County Schools earn an A from the state

Sarasota County students aren’t the only ones scoring high marks.

Sarasota County Schools has earned another A grade for the 2016-2017 school year from the Florida Department of Education, and is one of only two districts in the state to have earned an A every year since grading began in 20014.

“Though we are proud of retaining an A grade, we know that we have more work ahead to maintain the excellence within Sarasota County,” Superintendent Todd Bowden said in a release from Sarasota County Schools. “We are working hard this summer to put plans in place to make sure next year is even more prosperous for our students, because earning a high grade is only important if it reflects real continued progress for every student, every day.”

Of the 50 schools in the district that received grades, 42 maintained an A or B rating. The county has seven C schools and one D-rated. None of the county’s schools received an F.

Twelve of the schools rose one or two grade levels from the previous school year, while five decreased.

The district is graded on 11 different criteria, including test scores, the graduation rate and the number of middle and high school students taking accelerated or advanced courses. This district has been particularly focused on the success and learning gains of students who scored lowest on tests.

When looking at total points earned on all the metrics evaluated, Sarasota County scored sixth in the state.
