Giacomo Puccini's "Madama Butterfly" is one of the most recognizable and widely enjoyed operas in history. Audience response to the Sarasota Opera's production, which opened Feb. 11, has been so enthusiastic that the company decided to add an additional performance at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, March 12, at the Sarasota Opera House.

Since its opening last month, every performance of the opera, which follows the tragic love story of a young Japanese geisha named Cio-Cio San, has been sold out.

Last season, which marked the end of the company's nearly 30-year Verdi cycle, the company added a 13th performance of "Aida." Prior to that, the last time the company added a performance was in 2006, with its debut of Puccini's "La bohéme."
