12:36 a.m. — 3200 block of GMD
Fire: Police found a small fire burning near a kayak storage area, which officers determined that started in a trash can and spread to some nearby trees and brush. Firefighters put out the fire within seven minutes, and no kayaks were damaged in the fire.
Caught Red Handed
8:49 a.m. — 3800 block of GMD
Traffic Violation: A man drove his car into the bicycle lane in order to pass an officer waiting to turn using the shoulder of the road. Police immediately pulled the driver over and issued a citation for driving onto the bike path.
Unreal Estate
10:15 a.m. — 1000 block of Longboat Club Road
Defrauding an Innkeeper: A man called police to report he had discovered his Longboat Key property listed on Craigslist for rent. He had not listed it for lease. Officers said whoever may have been defrauded into paying to rent the property would have to file a police report in his or her home state.
Eagle Eye
3 p.m. — 600 block of Triton Bend
Animal: A resident called police to report that a construction site was too close to an eagle’s nest and appeared to be disturbing the bird. Officers located the nest, but could not find evidence of a disturbance. Also, police could not locate a town code addressing the issue.
Rocking Out
8:50 a.m. — 6300 block of GMD
Suspicious Person: A property manager called to report a suspicious person who had attempted to rent a room, but had her credit card declined. Another guest said she saw the woman sleeping on the beach, and the manager said the woman seemed “off.” After her card was declined, the woman climbed into her sports utility vehicle and “blasted loud music” for several minutes before leaving.
Seller Beware
10:15 a.m. — 1700 block of GMD
Disturbance: A property manager called police to report that a woman was coming to her property showings and causing verbal disturbances. When officers confronted the woman, she began to argue, but eventually calmed down. Police said she was no longer welcome, but could send a real estate agent on her behalf. The woman said she would look into buying other properties instead.
Catch and release
7:10 p.m. — 2300 block of Harbour Oaks Drive
Public Service: Police responded to reports of a snake in a resident’s bathroom. Upon arrival, another officer has already captured the snake and subsequently released it into the wild.
Push It Real Good
8:28 a.m. — 2800 block of GMD
Public Service: An officer came upon a woman whose car was stalled in a major thoroughfare. The woman told police the car had died on her, and police and a bystander pushed the vehicle off of the roadway. An officer gave the woman a ride to where she volunteers.
Double Dare
3:45 p.m. — 7000 block of the Longboat Pass Bridge
Juvenile Nuisance: Police stopped two teenagers after observing the pair jump from a bridge. The two boys told officers they were leaving the beach and jumped from the bridge on a dare. After police explained that it was dangerous and illegal, the teenagers were respectful and apologetic. An officer issued a verbal warning after the boys said they realized it was a bad decision.
