Helen C. Daly

Helen Daly, 88, of Longboat Key, died Feb. 22.

She was born in Newark, N.J., to the late John and Helen Gunser.

She was the administrator of anatomy for the Department of Anatomy at Temple University.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael J. Daly; stepson Michael Daly; and stepdaughter Michele Daly Abromowitz.

She is survived by her children, Robert Simms, Robin Fryzel and Rosemary Bremhorst; and 10 grandchildren.

Barbara L. Mann

Barbara Mann, 75, died Feb. 24.

She was born in Allegheny County, Pa., to Joseph “Pete” and Ruth E. Wallace. At 14, her family moved to Ravenna, Ohio, so they could develop and manage Sun Beau Valley Farm for Sterling Smith.

Barbara competitively showed horses in Pennsylvania and surrounding areas. She graduated from Ravenna Township High School, worked as a dental assistant and later sold real estate.

In 1965, she married Neil Mann Jr. She was active in her son’s school in the Mother’s Club. She and Neil co-chaired Pow Wow, a fundraiser for the school. They donated an annual scholarship to the school.

Barbara participated in events for Lawrence School, a school for children with learning differences. She sponsored a child each year so they could receive an education. She also sponsored an apartment at the Family and Community Services Veteran’s Home in memory of her brother, who served in Vietnam.

Christmas was Barbara’s favorite holiday, and she usually began decorating in October. She had seven trees in her house each year and donated one each year to Robinson Memorial Hospital. Each of her grandchildren had a tree outside as well, a ritual that the community grew to look forward to.

She enjoyed spending her summers at Muzzy Lake and on Longboat Key.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother Jay Wallace; and daughter-in-law Maria Mann.

She is survived by her husband, Neil; children Debbie Mann and Neil “Trey” Mann III; and eight grandchildren.

Thomas McKenna

Thomas McKenna, 68, of Longboat Key and Avon by the Sea, N.J., died Feb. 28.

He was born in Brooklyn to the late James and Johanna McKenna.

He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Army in the 11th Armored Cavalry Division, known as the “Black Horse” during the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the Enterprise Association of Steamfitters Local Union 638, the VFW and the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Michaele McKenna; siblings and their spouses; Daniel and Eileen, Mary Jane and Kevin McGuire, sisters-in-law Patricia and Anthony Micale and Jo-Ellen Basaman; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Dorothy Theresa McMullen

Dorothy McMullen, 89, of Midlothian, Va., died Feb. 19.

She was born in Fort Lee, N.J., to Mr. and Mrs. George Joseph McAvoy.

Dorothy, known as Dottie, was an artist who previously worked at TerryToons cartoons as the artistic designer for many of the caricatures presented in “Heckle and Jeckle,” “Mighty Mouse” and others. She spent her life living in various places, including Battle Creek, Mich., Franklin Lakes, N.J., and Longboat Key. She was a longtime member of Salisbury Country Club in Midlothian and the Longboat Key Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Douglas John McMullen; and son, Douglas John McMullen II.

She is survived by her daughter, Donna McMullen Schaaf and her husband F. Behle Schaaf; two grandchildren; their spouses; five grandchildren; and sister Marie McAvoy Amrhein.

Jacqueline Tursso

Jackie Tursso, 73, died Feb. 11.

She was born in St. Paul, Minn., and was a 1961 graduate of Derham Hall High School and attended the University of Minnesota.

She began her career as a flight attendant for Northwest Airlines, and worked for Aetna after becoming a mother. In 1971, she joined Blue Cross Blue Shield.

She was married in 1964 and had three daughters. In 1977, she married Dennis Tursso, with whom she shared 40 years of marriage. Some of her favorite things included spending time with her family, spoiling her grandchildren, Longboat Key sunsets, the Minnesota Vikings, traveling and decorating and shopping with friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis; daughters Shannon Buschman, Melissa Wangberg and Michelle Rencher; eight grandchildren; siblings Bill, Greg and Michael Hoffman and Stephanie Laramy; aunt Patricia Hurley; and many nieces and nephews.
