Brooks Larson is a senior on the Sarasota High baseball team. He pitched a shutout against George Jenkins High, ranked 19th in Florida by MaxPreps at the time, in the Sarasota Baseball Classic on March 20, racking up five strikeouts and allowing two hits. Larson also went 2-for-3 with an RBI in the Sailors' next game against Charlotte on March 21 while playing first base.
When did you start playing baseball?
I started playing baseball in Vermont at around 5 years old. My parents pushed me along, got me to play T-ball a little bit, and then I just kept playing. We moved to Florida when I was 10, and that's when things really picked up, and I started playing every day, year round.
What is the appeal of baseball to you?
I like baseball because I have always been able to excel at it. I'm able to go on and do my thing, and it just happens for me. It's really hard to explain in a sense. It just kind of happens.
What is your best skill on the field?
Being able to go out there and know that I can compete. I know that there is no moment too big for me.
Do you have a favorite baseball memory?
My favorite memories have just been playing here at Sarasota High. The skill that everyone has and the drive everyone has to go in and keep competing and winning all the time is amazing. The family that we have made here is amazing.
Why do you wear No. 22?
Well, actually my freshman year I got stuck with it. I was the last one in the locker room. Sophomore year, I was like, 'Well, I might as well stick with it now."
What is your favorite food?
It's got to be a burger. A really good burger. I put pretty much just lettuce on it. Lettuce is it.
What is your favorite subject in school?
Math. Love math. I have always loved how it's concrete. I know the answer and it comes right to my head.
What hobbies do you have besides baseball?
I love to fish and play some golf. Those are the two big ones.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
You have to go out there and know that you are the best person on the field. You also have to go out there and have fun. That's what (Sarasota High baseball coach Clyde) Metcalf says.
