While beachgoers settled in for a day of relaxation March 25 on Lido Beach, another, more active group gathered at the pavilion.
Dressed in neon shirts and armed with trash bags and buckets, city of Sarasota staff scattered along the coast to pick up trash. The project was one of several projects being held around Sarasota County as part of the Keep Sarasota County Beautiful cleanup initiative.
Keep Sarasota County Beautiful is affiliated with Keep America Beautiful, a national organization that supports community cleanup projects.
Even as staff piled 10 bags of trash, 4 bags of recyclables, a traffic cone, broken beach chairs and a tire near the Lido Beach dumpster for pickup, their job wasn't done.
City of Sarasota staff have adopted the beach and plan on having quarterly cleaning projects on the beach.
