Longboat firefighters ready to tee up

Aside from saving lives, LongboatKey Fire Rescue helps the community in myriad other ways.

Whether it’s CPR classes, adopting a family through Adopt-A-Family or helping local firefighters and their families during emergencies, the group does what it can to help neighbors.

Which is why in 2014, the Longboat Key Firefighter Association was launched. Lt. Bryan Carr, president of the organization, said an informal group was doing minor things, like the CPR program, but didn’t have a way to put it all together, so the association was born.

Right now, the association is 501(c)(4) social welfare organization. Carr said they are working to become a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit next month.

They want to keep expanding their community efforts and create a scholarship fund for those who want to become firefighters, EMTs or paramedics.

“We were taking baby steps,” Carr said. “We didn’t want to overextend ourselves, but three years in the making, and now we’re ready to do our first actual fundraiser.”

On Nov. 18, the association is hosting its first Longboat Key Firefighters Association Golf Classic at the Harbourside Golf Course at The Resort at Longboat Key Club.

“All of the proceeds raised are going to benefit the association and further our community outreach,” Carr said.

The association has participated in Morton’s Annual Firehouse Chili Cook-off, and Carr saw how well-received it was with residents and firefighters. Now, it wants to interact with citizens in a different capacity.

“We’ve got some golfers out here, and I’d love to see some of them at the tournament and meet and greet,” Carr said.

There is still time to register and sponsor the event.

Cost is $125 for individuals and $500 for a foursome. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. Nov. 18 and the shotgun start is at 8:30 a.m. Golfers will receive one round of golf, an appreciation package, golf shirt, refreshments and an awards ceremony and buffet.
