Turkey tidings

A few years ago, Judy Berlow bought a turkey hat to compete with the handiwork of her husband, Michael Berlow, who dresses the front yard of their Country Club East home with a giant inflatable turkey for Thanksgiving each year.

The hat also has become a holiday tradition. The couple took turns wearing it to their Nov. 16 Rotary Club of Lakewood Ranch meeting at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club.

"Michael likes to decorate the house, so I decided to decorate Michael," Judy Berlow says of why she bought the hat. "He'll wear it on Thanksgiving."

Garden Club gets into the spirit

Lakewood Ranch Country Club resident Cheryl Scheid held up a red coffee mug filled with a wooden toy soldier, holly and other Christmas-inspired leaves and decorations and exclaimed "Isn't it cute?" after assembling the piece.

The cup will go the elderly receiving food from Meals on Wheels this holiday season.

Scheid, vice president of the Lakewood Ranch Garden Club, and about 40 other members and 10 guests on Nov. 13 stayed after their regular meeting at Lakewood Ranch Town Hall to create more than 100 of the decorative mugs.

"This is always fun every year," Schied said. "It's a way to give back. People with Meals on Wheels are often alone on Christmas and it's a nice way to show them they aren't forgotten."

Club members also filled bags of toiletries for women at Stillpoint House of Prayer, in Bradenton.
