Braden River overcame the absence of two key offensive cogs — junior quarterback Bryan Gagg and junior running back Camaron White — to beat district foe Palmetto High 31-24 on the road.

In Gagg's place was junior Jake Hepler, who threw for 245 yards, 217 of those (and two touchdowns) to junior wideout Knowledge McDaniel. Senior running back Deshaun Fenwick also had a strong game, rushing for 204 yards and a touchdown. Senior wideout Craivon Koonce had the Pirates' other touchdown, a 28-yard pass from Hepler.

Lakewood Ranch was off Friday night. The Mustangs will play Venice High on Oct. 9.

The Out-of-Door Academy rescheduled its Friday night game, against Shorecrest Prep, to Oct. 9 because of a problem getting officials to the game.
