Comedian Drew Hastings derives much of his stand-up material from the other two roles he plays in his everyday life: farmer and small-town mayor. Hastings will bring his more than 20 years of stand-up experience to Sarasota through Oct. 15.

 

‘Anna in the Tropics’

Set in a Cuban Cigar Factory in late 1920s Florida, this play is about a new “lector” who is hired to educate and entertain factory workers but ends up being more influential than he anticipated. Runs through Oct. 29.

Sarasota Contemporary Dance opens its season with a collaboration between five company members and violinist Tai Murray, bandoneon player Rodolfo Zanetti and renowned harpist Ann Hobson Pilot. Dancers will perform to the tango styles of Argentine composer Ástor Pantaleón Piazzolla. Runs through Oct. 15.

 

Friday, Oct. 13

The Orchid Show: Earth, Air, Fire and Water

Thousands of orchids and other plants will be on display at this Selby exhibit, which will celebrate the diversity of the largest family of flowering plants. Runs through Nov. 26.

 

Don't Miss: Season Preview Opening Reception

530 Burns Gallery will present a season preview Friday at its opening reception. Peruse oil paintings, sculptures and jewelry pieces while getting to know three new artists: Arleen Joseph, Tommy May and Carter Wentworth.

Neil Berg uses artists from Meatloaf, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and several hit Broadway musicals such as “Hair” and “Rent” to tell the history of music from 50 of its most defining years — from the rock ‘n’ roll of the 1940s through MTV in the early ’80s.

Nik’s Pick: The Allison Event

Now in its second year, this tribute and fundraiser marks the release of the 2017 “Allison” beer in honor of the late Allison Francis Hall Nelson. This year’s brew is a raspberry wheat beer made with lemon peel, coriander and honey from Aloe Organics, the agricultural organization (and pending 501(c)3) she created  to grow organic produce for schools, hospitals, restaurants and grocery stores shortly before her death.
