Cindy Barnes had a lot to be proud of on Oct. 21 in J.D. Hamel Park.
Not only had she organized another successful Sarasota Pride Fest, but the event had garnered more public interest than she had seen in a decade. Members of the LGBTQ community and its allies gathered to enjoy live performances and food from local vendors.
"This is the most (people) we have had this early in 10 years," Barnes said.
But Barnes said it wasn't just attendance that was on the rise. Sponsors and entertainers both approached Barnes to participate in the festival — a welcome change from years past.
"I didn't have to go look," she said.
It's a change Barnes attributes to an increased interest in showing solidarity with the LGBTQ community.
"I think everyone feels like we need to step up," Barnes said.
